Intuition or Overthinking

Is It Intuition or Just Overthinking? How to Trust Yourself More.  Mug of Coffee With Words Written; Stop Overthinking

Have you ever had a gut feeling about something but ignored it, only to regret it later? Maybe you’ve spent hours analysing a decision, unsure whether you’re being guided by intuition or just overthinking everything?

If so, you’re not alone. Many women, especially those who are ambitious and driven, struggle to trust themselves. We’re conditioned to rely on logic and external validation, rather than our inner knowing. But deep down, your intuition is always there, whispering to you—if only you know how to listen. In the past I used to overthink everything & rarely listened to my intuition, I’m glad to tell you that’s changed!

What is Intuition?

Intuition is that quiet, inner voice or feeling that guides you without logical reasoning. It’s a deep, subconscious knowing that often appears as a sudden insight, a physical sensation, or a sense of certainty about something. Unlike overthinking, intuition doesn’t come with a list of pros and cons—it just is.

What is Overthinking?

Overthinking, on the other hand, is when your mind runs in circles trying to rationalise every possibility. It often comes with self-doubt, anxiety, and the need for reassurance. Instead of feeling calm and clear, you feel drained and stuck.

How to Tell the Difference

Here are some key ways to distinguish intuition from overthinking:

  1. Intuition feels calm and certain; overthinking feels anxious and doubtful.
    • Intuition is like a quiet knowing, whereas overthinking brings mental chatter and endless questioning.
  2. Intuition is immediate; overthinking takes time.
    • Intuitive insights often come suddenly and feel effortless, whereas overthinking can keep you stuck in a loop for hours or days.
  3. Intuition speaks in feelings; overthinking speaks in fear.
    • If your inner voice is warning you with a sense of peaceful knowing, it’s likely intuition. If it’s full of “what-ifs” and worst-case scenarios, it’s probably fear-driven overthinking.
  4. Your body knows.
    • Intuition often manifests as a physical response—a gut feeling, a tingling sensation, or a sense of lightness. Overthinking, however, can feel heavy, tense, or constricting in your body.

How to Strengthen Your Intuition

If you find yourself second-guessing your inner voice, here are a few ways to build trust in your intuition:

  • Quiet the noise. Spend time in stillness—whether through meditation, journaling, or deep breathing. Intuition thrives in calmness.
  • Listen to your body. Pay attention to how different decisions feel in your body. If something feels expansive and right, trust that.
  • Look back at past experiences. Recall times when you followed your intuition and it led you in the right direction. Let that build your confidence.
  • Practice small decisions. Start by trusting your gut on little things—like choosing a book to read or which route to take. The more you practice, the stronger your intuition will become.
  • Release the need for certainty. Intuition doesn’t always come with a logical explanation. Trust that knowing without needing all the answers.

Final Thoughts

You already have the wisdom within you, we are all intuitive beings. Learning to distinguish between intuition and overthinking is a skill, and the more you practice, the easier it gets. Start small, be patient with yourself. Journal about what you feel is your intuition then journal about the outcome: did you listen? Did it turn out well or better than expected? Did you ignore it & then wished you hadn’t? Your intuition won’t wrap you in cotton wool, we need to learn from our decisions and mistakes, however, when we listen & trust our intuition, life will be less stressful & painful. Know that every time you listen to your inner voice, you are strengthening your connection to your own power.
