Why Doctors Cannot Find What Is Driving Your Chronic Illness

You might have been right about your body all along – What to do when your symptoms are real but the tests show nothingBlue background with white medical cross and stethescope

If you have been living with chronic illness that conventional medicine cannot fully explain, you are not alone and you are not imagining it. Millions of women with conditions like fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, IBS, migraines and autoimmune disease have been told their tests are normal while their bodies tell a completely different story.

There is a particular kind of exhaustion that comes not from the symptom itself but from not being believed. You know something is wrong. You have known it for months, possibly years. You have been to the GP, had the blood tests, been referred, been discharged, been told it is stress, been told to try a different medication, been told to come back if it gets worse. And you sit in the car afterwards and think, I know my own body. Why can nobody find what I can feel?

You are not imagining it. And you are not wrong.

The system is not designed to find what you are looking for

This is the most important thing I want to say at the start of this piece, because I am not here to criticise the NHS or conventional medicine. What they do is extraordinary and genuinely life-saving. But it is designed to find structural problems. Things that show up on scans, in blood work, in measurable and observable data. What it is not designed to find is the driver.

The nervous system running on chronic threat because of experiences that happened twenty years ago. The belief formed in childhood that is quietly generating physical symptoms in the present. The emotional pattern that has been running so long it has become invisible, just the background hum of a life that does not quite feel right. These do not show up on a blood test. Not because they are not real. Because they are not physical. They are the instructions the body is following.

What research is beginning to show

Dr Howard Schubiner is a physician who has spent decades studying what he calls neuroplastic conditions. His work shows that the brain can generate genuine, measurable physical symptoms as a response to chronic threat, unresolved stress or traumatic experiences that have never been properly processed. His list of conditions likely to fall into this category is long. Migraines. Fibromyalgia. IBS. Chronic fatigue. Chronic back and neck pain. Tinnitus. Brain fog. Autoimmune conditions. Anxiety. And more.

Not every case of these conditions is neuroplastic. But many are. And the signal that points toward it is often exactly what you have already experienced. Multiple diagnoses that do not quite add up. Symptoms that fluctuate with stress. Treatment that manages things but never resolves. Tests that come back normal when you feel anything but. His point is not that these conditions are imaginary. It is the opposite. They are real. The pain is real, the fatigue is real, the impact on your life is real. But the driver is not where anyone has looked.

What Gabor Maté adds to this

Gabor Maté, one of the most respected voices in trauma and the body-mind connection, describes something that I think is one of the most honest things anyone has said about women’s health. He describes women as society’s stress absorbers. Not because women are weak or deficient. Because of how they are conditioned from the very beginning. To be there for everyone. To put others first. To people please, to keep the peace, to manage the emotional environment around them before attending to their own.

Women also have higher rates of emotional abuse, sexual abuse and interpersonal violence than men. And significantly higher rates of the neuroplastic conditions listed above. Those two facts are not unrelated.

When you spend years absorbing what cannot be expressed, the body eventually speaks. And the thing it says is almost never what anyone in a consulting room has thought to listen for.

The question nobody asked you

In sixteen years of working with women who have chronic unexplained conditions, the most useful thing I have ever done is ask a different question. Not what is wrong with you. But what has your body been trying to tell you. Not what diagnosis fits these symptoms. But what happened, and when, and what did you decide about yourself or the world in the wake of it.

Because almost without exception, when we find that moment, the one that started the pattern, the one that sensitised the nervous system to stay on alert, the symptoms begin to make sense in a way that no diagnosis ever quite managed. The root is almost always earlier than anyone expects. Quieter than the obvious event. More specific than any label.

And it is almost always findable.

What this means for you

If you have spent years being told your tests are normal while your body insists otherwise, I want to offer you a reframe that has changed how many of the women I work with understand their own health. Your body is not malfunctioning. It is communicating. It is producing symptoms that are real, that are affecting your life, that deserve to be taken seriously. And the reason conventional medicine cannot resolve them is not because there is nothing there. It is because the driver is not in the place anyone has looked.

The work I do goes to that place. Not with a fixed formula or a predetermined answer but by asking the subconscious directly to show us where this started, in your own language and specific to your story. When we find it and change the meaning the brain gave to that original moment, the body no longer needs to produce the symptom. Not always immediately. Not always dramatically. But in a way that holds, because we have gone to the source rather than the surface.

If any of this has resonated

You might want to start with understanding the map. My Chakra 101 workshop on Saturday 11th July 2026 in Herne Bay is one day that gives you the full body-mind framework, what each energy centre governs physically and emotionally, and what imbalance actually looks like in real life. £70. Link below.

Or if you are ready for the deeper work, The Healing Pathway is a membership built around finding the root of what is driving your health, your relationships and your repeating patterns. Everything is at the link below.

Either way, you were right about your body. You always were.

DM me if this has brought clarity or shown yo a way forward that you didn’t know existed. I hear you & see you.
